Kasumi Mutou
Race: Bat
Ability: Sonar

She's a youkai bat. Because of her wings, people often mistaken her for a vampire, and either run away or attack with overwhelming force. She's not very strong, so if the latter happens, she usually loses almost immediately.

Despite her dangerous circumstances, she tries to keep an optimistic outlook on life.

Yayoi Yajima
Race: Otoroshi
Ability: Power to hide in plain sight

Not a very complicated youkai. She likes high places, because she can jump down from them to shock anyone underneath.

In the story, she stumbles upon Reimu's shrine while nobody's home, so she tries to make it her new home. She's pretty weak, and not very smart either, so she's not much better than a fairy...

Gara Yamano
Race: Yama-uba
Ability: Power to cause landslides

A mountain-dwelling youkai, residing near the base of Youkai Mountain. She'd be more at home near the peak, but most of the mountain is controlled by the kappa and the tengu these days. Yama-uba are a rare sight in modern Gensokyo.

It's only natural for such a mysterious and suspicious youkai to kidnap children, and it seems like Gara's no exception. She doesn't eat humans, though, so captured children are usually just given a serious fright, then sent away to wander home. She thought she would get another victim on the night of the incident, but it seems that she bit off more than she can chew.

Living near the mountain, she has a few friends among the kappa, and sometimes tests new inventions for them. That's where she got her magic gloves.

Akeno Suzuoki
Race: Angler Fish
Ability: Hypnotism

A powerful youkai angler fish who has been living in this cave for hundreds of years. There's a rumor that people who wander into the cave without bringing a light of their own never come back alive... could she be the cause?

She's happy as long as she has somebody to lure into the depths of the cave and then attack. Not many people come into the caves, though, so she's usually bored. She doesn't mind the presence of the new youkai residing in the heart of the cave, because it means that more prey might come wandering in looking for her. In a sense, they're almost cooperating.

Truly an evil-hearted youkai left over from the Gensokyo of old.

Yuzuki Miura
Race: Earth spirit
Ability: Power to predict earthquakes

An earth spirit who has been here longer than even Akeno. She considers this cave her home, so she was a little annoyed when all the new youkai started settling in. Fortunately, though, they did little to disturb the cave itself, so she tolerated their intrusion, and even befriended one of them.

She has a very down-to earth personality, and dislikes lies. She tries to drive off interlopers without killing them.

Mahiru Kuwashima
Race: Ame-onna
Ability: Control of weather

A newcomer to the caves, who probably doesn't have much of a place this far underground. She is most powerful in natural rain, so she's actually weaker than normal down here. Of the group, she does most of the mediating with the other youkai who were already living in the cave. With her flexible personality, she's managed to avoid any major conflicts so far.

She is the newest member of Houko's group; before that, she was an idle wanderer. She joined the group primarily out of boredom, but is quite happy with the decision, as she has fun dealing with the various people Houko runs across. After settling things with the cave's native inhabitants, she was soundly defeated by Reimu, who wasn't open to negotiation.

She has a strong interest in people, and hates solitude. She seems easygoing, but she actually has a very high opinion of herself, and gets depressed when she loses.

Emi Kingetsu
Race: Youkai
Ability: Control of mirrors and reflections

A youkai with the ability to control reflections. A youkai of reflection has very little power alone; for years, Emi wandered the countryside in fear of youkai hunters, as she was very weak. Houko saved her life from a group of powerful humans, and her power over light proved a great match for Emi's power over reflection. Houko never told Emi to serve her; she does so of her own will, partially due to gratitude and partially out of admiration. She challenged Reimu because she didn't want her interfering with Houko's plans.

Emi is a very serious person, thanks to living on the run for many years. This creates problems for her sometimes when dealing with the more easygoing personalities of her traveling partners, who tend not to take her grave attitude seriously. She stubbornly continues to take matters seriously, despite the teasing she recieves for it.

Houko Nagazui
Race: Kirin
Ability: Control of light and darkness

A powerful kirin with power over light and darkness. Her origins are shrouded in mystery; she doesn't like to talk to herself, so only her sister knows where she came from, and she sure isn't going to tell anyone. Together with her small group of followers, she wanders the world; she is owed favors by powerful youkai in many countries, so she seldom has to rough it in the countryside. It seems that there's someone she knows in Gensokyo, but as for who that is, it seems to be another mystery.

The incident began when Houko's younger sister pulled a terrible prank on her. She's always coming up with pranks, but this time she finally crossed the line. As punishment for her sister, who loves bright, sunny days, she blocked out the light of the sun, covering Gensokyo in a supernatural darkness.

Houko can appear kind sometimes, but the only people she cares about are her immediate friends - she's more than a little cavalier about the happiness of strangers. Her personality is hard to understand, because she acts differently to different people and doesn't answer questions directly.

Kyokukou Nagazui
Race: Kirin
Ability: Control of electromagnetism

A powerful kirin that is almost nothing like her older sister. She loves talking about herself, and loves having fun at the expense of others. Accordingly, she's an insufferable prankster who will take any opportunity to play tricks on people around her, but always comes clean afterwards.

In exchange for being let off early for her punishment from Houko this time, she promised not to say what the prank she pulled was. By all accounts, though, it was one of her greatest stunts ever. It's not her nature to keep secrets, but she'll do it if Houko asks her to, because she's fond enough of her older sister to do what she says most of the time.

When Reimu and Marisa came to visit her on the mountain, she was thrilled to meet the humans who were even stronger than her sister. She didn't bear them any ill will, but because she was bored, and wanted to know whether she or Houko was stronger, she ended up fighting both of them.
